Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance, is a country rich in culture and history. With more than 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Italy holds more than any other country in the world and showcases some of humanity’s greatest treasures. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy stretches from the Italian Alps in the north to several exquisite southern islands that attract tourists from around the globe.

Italy is a founding member of both the European Union and NATO, and it has the fourth-largest economy in Europe. As a globally recognized destination, with major cities such as Milan, Rome, and Venice, Italy welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Beyond its iconic urban attractions, historical landmarks, and black-pebble beach tourism, visitors are also drawn to the country’s renowned gastronomy, world-class wines, and thriving artistic scene.

Geographically, Italy borders France, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Vatican City, and San Marino. Its languages include Italian, German, French, and Ladin, which is spoken in northern Italy. Nearly four-fifths of the country is mountainous or hilly terrain. Italy’s largest islands are Sicily — also the largest island in continental Europe — and Sardinia, while smaller islands include Capri, Elba, and Ischia. The University of Bologna, widely regarded as the oldest university in the world and founded in 1088, is also located in Italy.

With its capital city, Rome — known as the “Eternal City” — Italy is famous for being the birthplace of some of the most influential figures in world history. Visionary thinkers and scientists such as Galileo Galilei and Alessandro Volta were born in Italy, as were globally renowned artists including Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Italian explorers such as Amerigo Vespucci, Christopher Columbus, and Marco Polo were also among the first Europeans to travel through the Americas and the East.

Italy’s population of approximately 60 million people is located just a two-and-a-half-hour flight from London and approximately eight hours from New York City.
